“You get the couple of Viduka shouts and Harry Kewell shouts, obviously,” Cook mentioned in a recent conversation. “But hopefully my name is the next one up there. Just got to wait and see, obviously.”

A New Chapter in England

Cook's journey in the football world took a significant turn when he signed with Leeds in February 2025, transitioning from Perth Glory on a two-and-a-half-year deal. Despite the challenges of adapting to life in a foreign country, his initial foray into competitive football has been promising. During the 2025-26 season, he impressed in eight Under-18 appearances and showcased his skills with a clean sheet in his Under-21 debut against Tottenham.

Cultivating Talent in a New Environment

Head coach Scott Gardner praised Cook’s exceptional performance during his debut, highlighting the patience he exhibited while waiting for this opportunity. Living away from his family presents challenges, yet it fuels Cook’s passion for the game.

After completing trials across multiple clubs at age 17, it was Leeds that caught his attention. “When I went to Leeds, I thought it was the perfect move for me,” he expressed. The timing couldn’t have been better, as he joined just as the club was promoted to the Premier League.

Living alone in an apartment since turning 18, Cook has made sacrifices to pursue his footballing ambitions. “You do miss your family a lot, and that’s probably one of the hardest things,” he reflected, emphasizing the emotional toll on players separated from their loved ones. However, modern technology—like video calls—makes coping a bit easier.

A Supportive Goalkeeping Unit

The goalkeeping team at Leeds includes seasoned players such as England international James Trafford and Alex Cairns, who has provided invaluable mentorship. “All the keepers are really sound guys. They only want the best for you,” Cook noted, expressing gratitude for their guidance.

Training alongside first-team players occasionally gives Cook a glimpse of the elite level of football. “It’s an unbelievable experience every time. I try to work hard to get more opportunities with the first team,” he stated, underscoring the motivation behind his rigorous training routine.

From Outfield to Goalkeeper

Ironically, Cook's ascent to the goalkeeping position wasn't initially planned. He started as an outfield player until he was 12, inspired by his older brother’s position in goal. “I turned out to be not too bad at it, so I just stayed in there,” he explained, crediting his journey to being fortunate.

His training with Gold Coast United’s senior team at a young age helped prepare him for the jump to a Premier League academy, smoothing the transition. “They helped me out a lot. When I did make the step, it was a huge transition, but I found my feet quickly,” he recounted.

Proud to Represent Australia

In representing the Young Socceroos during the Asian Cup qualifying matches, Cook has found new pride in wearing the green and gold. “It means a lot. Singing the national anthem is emotional for me,” he remarked, expressing his desire to continue his journey toward the senior national team.

Drawing inspiration from figures like Maty Ryan, the Socceroos captain, Cook sees his achievements as a benchmark. “It shows that anything's really possible,” he noted, adding that Ryan’s leadership qualities resonate with him.

As Cook aims to elevate his game further, he’s focused on progressing from youth international status to a senior role. “I’m just working as hard as I can to see how far I can go,” he concluded, determined to leave his mark in European football, particularly in the Premier League.
