Nestory Irankunda Shines as Sporting CP Faces Pressure After Shock Defeat

Irankunda impressed in Sporting’s 2-1 loss, extending his run of starts as coach Rui Borges faces mounting pressure from fans.

Nestory Irankunda is making himself difficult to leave out of Sporting CP’s starting XI. His latest strong display came in a 2-1 home defeat to Academico de Viseu, a result that sharpened scrutiny of head coach Rui Borges. The contrast was stark: Irankunda’s influence kept growing, while Sporting’s inability to turn a home match into a win gave supporters another reason to question the team’s direction.

Irankunda’s influence keeps growing

The Australia international started his fifth straight match and led Sporting with a 7.9 SofaScore rating. In 85 minutes, he completed five of six dribbles, created six chances — the most in the match — and put one shot on target. His rating also topped that of goalscorer Luis Suarez, who scored 7.3. Those figures point to a player repeatedly involved in the attacking work, even as the team’s result went against him.

Chance creation and successful dribbling offer a useful view of Irankunda’s contribution, though they don’t tell the whole story of a match. A player can beat an opponent or create an opening without Sporting converting that work into a result. Here, the gap between his individual display and the defeat is the point: his form gives Borges something to build around, but it can’t settle the team’s wider problems by itself.

That performance follows an assist and a penalty won across his previous two appearances. Since joining from EFL Championship side Watford, Irankunda has moved into the regular lineup and is producing the kind of work that gives Borges a clear reason to keep backing him. Five consecutive starts suggest that he’s earned a sustained opportunity, while the contributions across three matches show more than a single eye-catching outing. The next test is whether he can keep influencing games as opponents adjust to his presence.

Irankunda’s recent contributions have included an assist and a penalty earned.

Results put Borges under pressure

The loss brought an angry response at Estadio Jose Alvalade, where supporters whistled and waved white handkerchiefs at the final whistle. Sporting are third, nine points behind leaders Porto, after nine league rounds. They had already drawn criticism for failing to beat Arouca and lost 3-2 at home to LASK in the Champions League the previous week. The defeat to Academico de Viseu therefore landed amid a run of results that had already weakened the mood around the team.

For a coach at a major club, poor results can quickly turn a single match into a broader judgment on performance. Sporting’s position and recent disappointments help explain why the crowd’s response was so sharp, though they don’t establish what the club will do next. The pressure is real; what remains unclear is whether Borges can ease it through a change in results.

Borges accepted the crowd’s reaction as part of the job at a major club. “It’s natural, the fans’ dissatisfaction is part of the game, we have to understand,” he said. “We’re at a big club, the pressure is daily, it would be bad if there wasn’t any dissatisfaction.” Asked whether the criticism was fair, he replied: “I don’t know if it’s fair or not. Dissatisfaction is natural, and I deal with it well.” His response acknowledged the supporters’ frustration without conceding that their judgment was right or wrong.

A personal bond amid a difficult spell

Irankunda has described his relationship with Borges as strong, crediting the coach’s belief with helping him settle into the side. “I feel good working with him. He believes in all the players, including me. We have a special relationship,” he told Portuguese media. “I just want to be well and he helps me improve.” For a young player establishing himself in a new lineup, that backing can matter: confidence and regular minutes give him room to develop, while the coach gets a clearer picture of what he can contribute.

That relationship also gives Irankunda’s run of starts a personal dimension, but it can’t be separated from the team’s results. Borges’ support has helped the Australian feel settled; the coach still has to answer for a side that has dropped points and lost at home. And this is the part most people overlook: a player’s rise can be good news for Sporting while doing little, by itself, to quiet criticism of the manager.

What comes next for Sporting

Sporting’s next test is a Taca da Liga quarter-final against Maritimo on Wednesday (AEDT), followed by a league visit to Casa Pia on Sunday (AEDT). The schedule gives Irankunda an immediate chance to extend his run and gives Borges two opportunities to respond on the pitch. If you're working in this space, the distinction matters: individual form can sustain selection, but results will shape the conversation around the coach.

For Irankunda, the task is to keep creating, carrying the ball and contributing directly when chances arise. For Borges, the challenge is broader: Sporting need performances that translate into results and give the supporters a reason to lower their frustration. The numbers here are underwhelming for the club, even with a standout showing from its Australian winger.

Still, one defeat doesn’t settle what happens next. The coming matches will show whether Irankunda’s growing role can become part of a steadier run for Sporting, and whether Borges can turn pressure into a platform for improvement. A promising player. A team still searching for answers.
