Harry Souttar Anchors Leicester’s 4-0 Win as Russell Martin Gets Breathing Room

Souttar made 15 clearances in Leicester’s 4-0 win at Bromley, helping the Foxes climb to 10th and extend their run of consecutive victories.

Harry Souttar’s return to Leicester City’s starting defence has brought a sharper edge to the club’s recovery. The Socceroos centre-back played all 90 minutes in a 4-0 win at Bromley on Wednesday morning AEST, helping Leicester secure consecutive League One victories and giving manager Russell Martin some welcome breathing room.

A defensive platform for Leicester’s climb

Souttar’s numbers captured his influence: 15 clearances, four interceptions and two tackles, alongside an 89 per cent pass completion rate. Leicester set up in a 3-4-2-1, with Souttar central between Warren O’Hora and Caleb Okoli. Will Alves and Luke Thomas operated as the wide midfielders.

The centre-back returned to the XI for a 2-1 victory over Doncaster Rovers on October 17, after sitting out the 3-1 home loss to Peterborough United as an unused substitute. He had captained Leicester in a midweek cup tie shortly before that defeat. Martin kept the same starting side for the trip to Bromley.

That selection change has coincided with a quick rise in the table. Leicester had nine points from eight matches and sat 17th; after two wins with Souttar back in the line-up, they had 15 points from 10 games and were 10th. The Bromley result also gave Leicester their first pair of consecutive League One wins this season.

Martin prioritises the clean sheet

Leicester scored three times before the interval, but Martin singled out the defensive display after the match. “Bromley is a hard place to come and hard to play here but we played really well, but the thing I’m pleased about most is we kept a clean sheet,” he said, according to the Western Telegraph.

He added: “I liked the way we managed the game, there was one five-minute spell where we got a little complacent but we got back on it quickly and were good value for our win.”

Leicester also extended their unbeaten away run. For Martin, that defensive control and the way his side responded to a brief lapse offered a useful sign of progress after relegation to the third tier.

Souttar’s place after a summer of speculation

Souttar returned to the King Power after captaining Australia at the 2026 World Cup in North America, where the Socceroos reached the Round of 32. He also played every minute of Australia’s recent friendlies against Brazil.

He captained Leicester in the first two league matches of the season while Sheffield United pursued him and Wrexham were reportedly monitoring the situation. The Daily Telegraph’s John Percy reported on August 11 that Souttar had told Leicester he wanted to join Sheffield United, but the defender stayed at the club after the transfer speculation.

Martin later described a player focused on earning his place. “He’s got a fantastic attitude and wants to play,” he told LeicestershireLive. “Harry’s been brilliant and he’s not been in once to say, ‘I want to leave’, and all that.”

Leicester signed Souttar from Stoke City in 2023 for what was then an Australian-record transfer. Two serious injuries disrupted his early seasons at the club; now fit and back in the centre of the defence, he has a chance to help turn a difficult start into a steadier campaign.
