Pressure Mounts on Ange Postecoglou Following Al-Nassr's AFC Champions League Defeat

Football can shift gears rapidly, and few understand this better than Ange Postecoglou. Just weeks after celebrating a notable achievement with Tottenham Hotspur, he now finds himself under scrutiny at Al-Nassr.

The latest test came with a disheartening 4-0 defeat against Al Ain in the opening match of the AFC Champions League Elite, adding to the team's woes as they faced their heaviest loss in the tournament's history. This disappointing result has prompted fans and analysts to raise doubts about the effectiveness of his strategies, particularly concerning Cristiano Ronaldo's role on the pitch.

A mere month ago, Postecoglou and Al-Nassr basked in the glory of an impressive comeback victory against local rivals Ettifaq, winning 3-2 after trailing. The initial response to his coaching styles, which emphasized an aggressive forward play, drew enthusiastic support — especially following a stellar season where the team won 28 out of 34 league games. Hopes were high for continuing that momentum this season.

However, the atmosphere has shifted dramatically. With only four points earned from the last three Saudi Pro League matches, fans have begun to voice their frustrations. While Al-Nassr remains in third place, just two points shy of the league leaders Al-Hilal, the lackluster performance against Al Ain has raised red flags.

One disgruntled supporter, Abdulaziz Al-Haqqan, criticized the team's tactics, stating, “We started with three at the back and it didn’t work. We were outmatched by Al Ain, who had the space and time they needed to dominate.” Postecoglou has cited a demanding schedule, with nine matches in just the first month of the season, as a potential factor for their recent struggles, particularly in the face of rising temperatures and high humidity.

Yet, Al-Haqqan remains unconvinced. He argues, “The excuses are repetitive; we didn’t lose because of fatigue; we made mistakes and failed to adapt.” His sentiments reflect broader frustrations among the fanbase, many of whom are beginning to lose patience.

Former Al-Nassr player Hussein Abdulghani voiced strong criticism, particularly regarding the team’s defensive flaws, warning that without immediate corrective actions, the path ahead could be rocky. Concerns also linger around Ronaldo, whose influence on the field has been questioned. Although the Portuguese superstar is a marquee name in Saudi football, he currently seems to lack the form that characterized his earlier performances.

In the victorious clash against Ettifaq, Postecoglou faced backlash for substituting an visibly unhappy Ronaldo at halftime, but his decision garnered praise after a successful second half. Now, the dialogue has shifted to whether the 41-year-old should remain on the pitch at all, as his current performance level does not reflect that of a top player.

Roel Coumans, a seasoned coach with experience in the Saudi league, isn't surprised by the mounting pressure on Postecoglou. He pointed out, "In Saudi Arabia, winning is the only option." While he acknowledges Postecoglou's protective approach towards his players, Coumans believes the challenge has intensified following the departure of key midfielder Marcelo Brozovic.

Despite the setbacks, Coumans insists that Al-Nassr retains sufficient quality to succeed, adding, "The league situation isn't dire. Al Ain may not be perceived as a strong opponent by Saudi standards, but they capitalized on our weaknesses." As the international break begins, concerns arise about the lack of training time for the players who will be off with their national teams.

Coumans remains optimistic for the future, however. He noted that the initial weeks of the season often carry challenges due to high temperatures and humidity but expects an uptick in performance as conditions improve.

“I know from experience that the first few weeks of the Saudi season are tough, but as October approaches and the weather cools, we can expect the team's tempo to rise, which aligns well with Postecoglou's style,” he stated.
